Azure Bay Holidays is always on the lookout to add value to the portfolio of services that it offers to its guests while they visit Malta for their holidays.
A new enterprise is looming on the horizon! George Debono, one of the owners is always looking for a new project!
The new project involves …….
The restoration of 1141m2 of existing rubble walls and the construction of 668m3 new ones along the parameters of an 0.7ha of terraced agricultural land.
George Debono, the owner had been considering this investment for a number of years but given the substantial amount of money involved, this was only possible with the intervention of the EARFD funds. The land under consideration is agricultural land within very close proximity to the sea. At the moment of purchase, the land was in a dire state of complete neglect with a substantial amount of soil having been blown away to the nearby fields or the sea.
The primary motive for such an investment was:
- the prevention of soil erosion and reduce its depletion to nearby fields or the sea.
- the re-activation of abandoned land for cultivation purposes on an organic farming basis;
- the provision of support means structure to consolidate the aesthetic environmental area as well as to strengthen landscape quality as well as serve as territorial boundaries;
- the reduction of habitat fragmentation and enhance biodiversity;
- the preservation and protection of flora and fauna and other national habitats and species that this Natura 2000 site hosts;
- the sustainability of the agricultural land in Malta such as the non-use of pesticides or other chemicals which harm the many species that live on-site;
- plant over 200 trees including olive, carob, permanganates and fig trees along the periphery of the terraced agricultural land; and
- render the agricultural practice more sustainable in view of the applicant`s intended way forward to grow organic.
In light of the above and with the support of the EAFRD Funds received, George Debono can now gear all his endeavors in order to reap the above benefits with a view to more sustainability and preservation.
